On the film projects that you guys are working on now, what speed do you film at? Do you prefer to use the Super 8 standard of 18 fps or do you shoot faster, say at 24 fps?
I'm asking because I've got a new camera (Nikon Super-Zoom model) and it has the option of shooting at either 12, 18 or 24 fps. The manual says that 12 is for shooting things you want to speed up, and the 24 is for doing slo-mo effects, but I've heard that some Super 8 filmmakers like to shoot it at 24 and project it at 24, like the standard Hollywood film.

I shoot 24fps, but my camera also has a 54fps, so I still have the option of slow motion. If you are interested in doing slow(er) motion, then you should probably shoot at 18fps and save the 24fps to slow things down.

Note: My current projector is 18fps, so when I'm checking out footage, everything is slightly slow (because it was shot at a base 24fps). The effect is not so much slow motion as you would expect it, but an etherial version of real time. It's quite dreamy.

I always shoot 24fps, it just looks better.

It's also nice to think you're using the same frame rate as the big boys.

Always 24 (sound speed) It also makes telecine viable. The only exception would be landscapes in low light at 12 because it doubles the max exposure, but your camera movements have to be slowed as well (make sure nothing animate is in frame to give it away though!)

Whener possible shoot at 24 fps. Otherwise it will be faster or slower than real time.

But, the other night I was doing some documentary type work and there simply was not anywhere near enough light and I shot at 18 fps. It was at that speed or nothing.
